Lady Gaga: The Chromatica Ball

Taking Motion Capture Beyond the Studio.

01/ Project overview

Taking Motion Capture Beyond the Studio.

Lady Gaga: The Chromatica Ball Tour was a major international concert production combining live performance, music, elaborate staging and striking visual design.

As part of the motion capture team at Target3D, Samuel Lawrence contributed to the production through a remote motion capture setup in London.

Rather than using a permanent motion capture facility, the team transported the necessary equipment to a separate studio in London, where a temporary capture environment was established for the shoot.

Samuel was involved in the motion capture production, followed by processing and cleaning the recorded movement data for delivery.

The final animation data was supplied as FBX files, providing the production team with cleaned motion capture assets ready for integration into their downstream animation workflow.

The project demonstrated how professional motion capture can be deployed beyond a dedicated studio, adapting to different production spaces without losing sight of the technical requirements of the final deliverables.

03/ Founder's voice

"One of the interesting things about working on Lady Gaga's Chromatica Ball Tour was that we weren't capturing in our usual motion capture studio.

We packed up the equipment, transported everything to another studio in London and built a temporary motion capture setup for the shoot.

That's one of the things I enjoy about motion capture. You're not always working in a perfectly prepared environment. Sometimes you have to take the technology somewhere else, figure out the space and make it work.

Once the performances were captured, we took the data through post-production, cleaned it up and delivered the final animations as FBX files.

It was a great example of how adaptable motion capture can be when you understand both the technical setup and the work that needs to happen afterwards."

04 / The Process

01. Remote Studio Preparation

The project required motion capture to take place at a separate studio location in London rather than at Target3D's permanent capture facility.

The necessary capture equipment was packed and transported to the location, where the team prepared a temporary motion capture environment.

02. On-Location Motion Capture

With the equipment installed, the team carried out the motion capture shoot at the remote studio.

Working away from a dedicated capture stage required adapting the setup to the available space while maintaining the technical requirements of the recording process.

03. Motion Data Processing

Following the shoot, the recorded motion capture data was taken through post-production.

This involved cleaning and refining the captured movement to prepare the animation data for delivery.

04. FBX Delivery

The final cleaned motion capture data was exported and supplied in FBX format.

This allowed the receiving production team to use the animation assets within their own downstream workflows.

The work covered the complete capture-to-delivery process, from preparing an off-site motion capture environment to supplying the final animation files.

05/ Challenges & Solutions

A key challenge was delivering a motion capture shoot outside the controlled environment of a permanent capture studio.

This required transporting the equipment, establishing a working capture volume at a different location and adapting the technical setup to the available production space.

The team approached the shoot by creating a temporary motion capture environment on location, allowing the performance capture work to take place without requiring the production to move into a dedicated motion capture facility.

The responsibility didn't end when the recording finished. The captured performances also needed to be processed, cleaned and prepared for delivery in a format that could be used by the receiving team.

By handling both the on-location capture and the subsequent data preparation, the team provided a workflow from the temporary studio setup through to the final FBX deliverables.

06/ The Outcome

The project resulted in the successful completion of an off-site motion capture shoot in London, followed by the delivery of cleaned animation data in FBX format.

Samuel's involvement covered both the capture and post-production stages, contributing to a workflow that allowed motion capture performances to be recorded outside a permanent studio and prepared for further use by the production team.

The experience demonstrated the value of a flexible motion capture approach, where the equipment and technical expertise can be brought directly to the production location.

It is also an example of the experience that informs Samuel Lawrence Studio's approach to mobile motion capture and post-production today.
